Introduction to supervision (formerly Supervisor Skills)

Step confidently into your supervisory role with our Introduction to Supervision course, designed for new or soon-to-be named Clinical and Educational Supervisors in UK postgraduate medical training. Our General Medical Council (GMC) aligned course equips you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to supervise effectively from day one. You’ll gain a clear understanding of the distinct responsibilities of clinical and educational supervisors, and how to meet the GMC’s benchmark for trainer recognition. The course is mapped to the Academy of Medical Educators’ professional standards and supports all five core values for medical educators.

Please note this course is targeted at those who are new to supervising roles. If you have been a CS or ES for 2+ years, please join us for the Advanced Educational Supervisor course instead.

6 CPD points will be awarded on completion of this course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you’ll be equipped to:

  1. Take on supervisory responsibilities with confidence and gain a clear understanding of the distinct roles of clinical and educational supervisors in UK postgraduate medical training
  2. Maintain high standards in supervision through practical strategies that support safe, effective and ethical practice
  3. Set clear, achievable goals for resident doctors using SMART criteria to support their personal development and progression
  4. Deliver impactful feedback and appraisals that foster growth, motivation and performance improvement
  5. Make informed decisions about trainee performance by interpreting workplace-based assessment evidence with clarity and confidence

Who should attend?

  • Consultants, specialty or specialist doctors who have some experience of UK training to become an educational and clinical supervisor for clinical radiology or clinical oncology specialist trainees
  • Senior trainees in their last year of training

Delegates are expected to participate in all activities at this interactive workshop.
