The National Safe Sedation (NSS) course was established in response to the publication of ‘Safe Sedation Practice for Healthcare Procedures. Standards and Guidance’ (Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. October 2013) and subsequently endorsed by, ‘Safe sedation practice for healthcare procedures. An update.’
(Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. February 2021).
It involves a 1 day small group face-to-face teaching day, concluding with a MCQ quiz. A mandatory e-learning pre-course (about 6 hours work) has to be completed before attendance at the teaching day.
Several courses are run each year, predominantly in Salford and London, and are open to all healthcare professionals.
The course fee is £300 for medical staff (£250 early bird discount) and £75 for NHS non-medical staff. For non-medical staff in the independent sector the course fee is £150.
